The stages of fasting

  1. Determination – determining the length and the type of fast
  2. Confusion – When you start doing math.  How long?
  3. Longing – Thinking about what you have put aside
  4. Contemplation – the stage when you will be confronted and want to give in.
  5. Focus – you now know for sure what you are doing.  You have a plan.
  6. Hunger – your body is complaining.
  7. Peace – It is starting to become habit.  You are now a faster.
  8. Happiness – You see more clearly, mercy and favor begin to manifest.

Humility –

  1. Humility is reality-centered.  It is the recognition and acceptance of reality through open-mindedness to truth.  Humble leaders grasp their own capabilities in relation to others and the situation at hand.  The ability to listen and learn
  2. The opposite of humility is pride.  Humility is opposed by two forms of pride on a spectrum of self-centeredness, ranging from extreme overconfidence to exaggerated lowliness.
  3. True humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.
  4. Humility cannot occur without cultivating our comfort with accepting criticism and compliments.  Listening to others perspectives while projecting confidence – that shows a true knowledge, skill and ability.

Humility is the heart of good leadership.  Commit yourself to boldly seeking, finding and doing the real good and you will find humility.

Isaiah 58:6

Is this not the fast that I have chosen; To loose the bonds of wickedness and to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?  Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?

Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of YAHWEH shall be your rear guard.  Then  /you shall call, and YHWH will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, “Here I am”

If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger and speaking wickedness, If you extend your soul to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday.  YHWH will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

Those from among you shall build the old waste places; You shall raise up the foundations of many generations; And you shall be called the Repairer of the Breach, The Restorer of Streets to Dwell in.

If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, From doing your pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy day of YHWH, honorable, And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, Nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking YOUR OWN WORDS, Then shall you delight yourself in YHWH; And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of he earth. And feed you with the heritage of Jacob, your father.  The mouth of YHWH has spoken.

Joseph – Genesis – Joseph is given a dream.  He tells his father and his brothers about his dream.  The dream is that Joseph will become a ruler and that his brothers will bow down to him.  His brothers argue about what to do with Joseph.  Some want to kill him while others argue to throw him into the well out of love for their father – Israel.  Joseph was his father’s favorite as he was the first born of his beloved 2nd wife Rachel.  While in the well, slave traders come by – stop to get water and see Joseph and carry him to Egypt.

Joseph is purchased by Potiphar.  Joseph proves to be such a great servant that Potiphar puts him in charge of everything.  He is handsome.  Potiphar’s wife asks him to “LIe with her”.  He refuses.  In his refusal, he states that it would be wrong.  Potiphar trusts me and God would not honor it.  Joseph knows where his blessing comes from.  Joseph, in spite of his circumstances, sees the favor and mercy that YHWH has bestowed on him, and even though a temptation is set before him … he resists it.  He refuses it and even though he does the right thing before God, he is thrown into prison.

In prison, he is again put in charge.  The prison keeper recognizes his ability, acumen and attitude.  Joseph is focused on mercy and favor.  He is not focused on misfortune or unfairness.

He was unfairly treated by his brothers.  He was unfairly treated by Potiphar.  He is now in jail.

While in prison, Joseph notices that two men are looking sad.  He asks “Why do you look so sad today?  Gen 40:7 They say, “We each have had a dream, and there is no interpreter of it.”  Listen now to what Joseph says … He is referring to his faith and his trust in God that he learned in Israel’s home.  “Do not interpretations belong to God?  Tell them to me, please.

Joseph hears both of their dreams and gives both of them precise interpretations.  The butler is to be taken from prison and back to the Pharaoh’s side to serve as his cupbearer within three days.   After Joseph told the butler his dream, he asked the butler to remember him before Pharaoh because he was unjustly held.  The baker also told his dream.  Joseph told him the meaning of his dream … You also will be taken from prison in three days, but you will be hanged and the birds will eat your brains and your face.

The butler did not tell Pharoah about the dream.  It wasn’t until two years later that the Pharaoh had a dream. Pharoah let the butler know that none of his wise men could interpret the dream.  The butler then told Pharaoh of Joseph.  Joseph is summoned … They shave him and clean him up, putting fine clothes on him.  Pharaoh asks Joseph to interpret the dream saying “I have had a dream and there is no one who can interpret it.  But I have heard it said of you that you can understand a dream, to interpret it.  Joseph says “It is not me, God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace”

Now, go read the story of Daniel.  Start in chapter 1.   I want you to see what YHWH is trying to show you here.  As you consider the 5 reasons to fast – I want you to focus on the first two – Direction and Humility – I want you to consider the definition that I have given you for humility.

Now watch the stages – determine that you are going to get direction from Yah and that you will receive the required Humility FOR PROMOTION –
